"Me First!"
There’s a pretty cute book for kids with this exact title to check out if your little one always wants to go first or has a friend at school who is stuck on this.
It comes down to taking turns and being a thoughtful member of the community. The bigger life lesson we’re working to help our kiddos understand is that it’s not all about us all the time.
We don’t want to teach this in a judgemental or resentful way. In fact, be validating in that it does seem more fun to be first as well as matter-of-fact in your teaching and practice.
At home, in play and otherwise, see to it that sometimes they go first and other times, other family members get to be in the lead.
With this practice, their sense of empathy, compassion and ‘place’ will naturally be more balanced and deep. This will lead to them being a better group member and team player.
